It's been strange to be sure. For me the better word is "inexplicable". And again for me, this is the second winter in a row I have felt this way. One could argue that the real disaster happened last year in acquiring Wiggenton and Nix instead of legitimate quality players. It made the needed total revamp of all three OF positions nearly impossible this year. The pieces they needed were available last year for far less than lesser players signed for this year. Strange? Yup.

Those guys he is picking up go under the rubric of "low cost high upside". He will announce over and over, if things do not go well, that the players "have to perform, and if they do we will compete". That reasoning only makes sense if one expects all of their performances to exceed their career performances to date. The odds are huge that will not happen. But of course, using this logic, he will be able to blame the players or Charlie, instead of taking the responsibility himself.

What's really strange, to the point of being sick, is that it's 14 days till pitchers and catchers report. And I can't wait.

Not a big surprise with Ramirez. He wasn't going to make the team anyway and was out of options, so they would've had to do it sooner or later. Maybe they can sneak him through and just outright him to Lehigh Valley. We shall see.

I agree it's pretty tough to find the Yuniesky Betancourt silver lining. I don't think it's a good sign if he makes his way anywhere near the field for the Phillies. Ever. Although I guess if Rollins was hurt and Galvis was hurt, he might be better than Martinez at short. Closest I can come to a defense is that his career numbers against left-handed pitching are about the same as Rollins'. Rollins 272/326/426 against lefties and Betancourt 272/304/417.

It has been kind of a strange off-season for Amaro.

At least Betancourt didn't cost a lot and got a minor league deal. It's funny his agent was assuring us about a month ago that Betancourt would get a major league contract.

JC Ramirez DFA to make room for Durbin on the roster.

Are the Phillies trying to corner the market on "worst every-day player"? First Michael Young (who admittedly has a chance to improve), then Delmon Young, now Betancourt? What's next...Jeff Francouer?

It's almost as if Amaro is TRYING to get fired.
