I think Amaro is trying to make a team without spending money. The Phillies spent all of their money and got a core that's old and overpaid. He has to add a ton of starters who don't cost anything. That means taking guys other people don't want. Let's hope he picked the right ones.

Hard to remember a time with more unknowns. It could be really good or just a complete collapse.

And frankly, I have no idea what to expect anymore from the front office in terms of where they see this team going. This is the second consecutive season the winter has made no sense to me. Different in September than now? I guess. But what Amaro is doing or what he's trying to accomplish or how just escapes me.

Seems like there are just a huge number of unknowns. Is Halladay Halladay? Can Michael Young play third? Can Delmon Young play outfield? Can Brown or Ruf play at all? Can Revere hit? I agree that I'm definitely not ready to say the season is lost. Lot of moving pieces, though. I also expect that the team that ends the year might look a whole lot different than the team that starts it.

My guess is this team will probably be in the fight for a post season birth throughout most of the season. Probably the second wild card slot, so they will be in the one game playoff. I like their chances with having (hopefully) three guys that could pitch that game.

We shall see.

That is my hope. As we know all too well, being good on paper does not necessarily translate into being good on the field. (Remember talking about having four 20 game winners? Uh huh, I bought a "Four Aces" T-shirt too.) So just because the Braves and Nats have a terrific set of paper teams does not mean that they will be in the post season. And just because Dom Brown And just because Laynce Nix and Dom Brown are going to start games for us doesn't mean that we might not have all of the requisite "ifs" break our way; after last year, we ought to get some of those "ifs" just by the law of averages.

It will be interesting to see how the pundits rank us this year preseason. Last year they picked us for the Series. I wonder if they will project us as a sub-.500 team this year. Maybe they will be just as wrong.

Read it. I agree that there's huge potential for 2013 to blow up on the Phillies. I don't think investing $750,000 in Delmon Young is a mistake, though.

I think the Braves made a great deal to get Upton. Prado had a fantastic 2012, but that's probably the best year of his career. Hopefully there will be more for Phillie fans to do this season than watch the Nats and Braves battle it out at the top of the division.

Atlsnta completes the reunion of the Upton brothers. Not good for us, I'm thinking. They had to give up Prado, which is not good for them. I think they are really gonna miss that guy. Big time. But I admit that I am trying to find reasons to think we have any chance at all for the post season. So I am cobbling together any shred of evidence at all.

The line up above is not helping me to do that. Remember when our line up was among the two or three most feared in all of baseball? Gone are those days.

Doc needs to be really good. Utley and Howard need to show up. Michael Young needs to be the guy from two years ago. Adams needs to be whole - and good - again. Revere and one other guy HAVE to be good in the OF (would it be completely impossible for Ruf to hit 270 with 30 dingers?).

C'mon. Work with me here.
