Earlier this month I took a guess at the hitters likely to make the team coming out of spring training. Here’s what I came up with:
| Other candidates | ||
| 1 | Kratz | D Ruf |
| 2 | Howard | H Quintero |
| 3 | Utley | S Lerud |
| 4 | Rollins | K Frandsen |
| 5 | Young | E Inciarte |
| 6 | Nix | T Gillies |
| 7 | Revere | L Collier |
| 8 | Brown | J Mitchell |
| 9 | Mayberry | C Hernandez |
| 10 | Galvis | M Martinez |
| 11 | P Orr | |
| 12 | A Blanco | |
| 13 | J Fields |
I guessed Frandsen, Ruf and Quintero would win the three remaining spots.
Since then, the Phillies have added Delmon Young, adding the right-handed corner outfielder everyone knew they were looking for. They also signed 30-year-old right-handed outfielder Joe Mather. Mather will come to spring training as an NRI and the linked article says he will be joined by Tommy Joseph and Cody Asche.
Here’s my updated guess on how things look at this point:
| Other candidates | ||
| 1 | Kratz | D Ruf |
| 2 | Howard | H Quintero |
| 3 | Utley | S Lerud |
| 4 | Rollins | K Frandsen |
| 5 | M Young | E Inciarte |
| 6 | Nix | T Gillies |
| 7 | Revere | L Collier |
| 8 | Brown | J Mitchell |
| 9 | Mayberry | C Hernandez |
| 10 | Galvis | M Martinez |
| 11 | D Young | P Orr |
| 12 | A Blanco | |
| 13 | J Fields | |
| J Mather | ||
| T Joseph | ||
| C Asche |
I think Galvis still has to make the team. Somebody has to backup short. I think Martinez is the only guy with a real shot to take that slot from him and I don’t think it will happen.
Five outfielders now — Young, Revere, Brown, Mayberry and Nix. I think all five start the year with the Phils unless they are traded or injured before Opening Day.
Five infielders on the list — Howard, Utley, Rollins, Young and Galvis. Galvis can backup second, third and short and the outfield crew can backup first. I think it means another infielder isn’t a necessity.
If all those guys make the team and the Phillies start the year with 13 hitters, it means they have two slots open. One of them has to go to a catcher. I’d still give that slot to Quintero. Lerud seems like the other guy with a shot to be the second catcher, but I’d guess Quintero takes the job.
That would just leave one open position on a team with five infielders, five outfielders and two catchers. Ruf and Frandsen seem like the obvious choices to fill the final hitting position. My guess is still that it will go to Frandsen.
That would give the Phillies 13 hitters — Kratz, Quintero, Howard, Utley, Rollins, Michael Young, Galvis, Frandsen, Delmon Young, Revere, Brown, Mayberry and Nix.
Six new NRI invites to spring training are discussed here.
In this article, Amaro says that Brown and Ruf will be battling it out for the left field position. It also points out that Brown and Ruf have options remaining that would allow them to be sent to the minors while Mayberry does not. Again, I like the idea of Brown playing in left field rather than right a lot. I am going to be surprised if Young spends much time in right field in 2013, though. If Brown is uninjured and does not start the year with the team, I will be stunned.
Delmon Young’s contract includes $2.75 million in incentives. The article suggests that $600,000 in incentives are related to his weight.

Atlsnta completes the reunion of the Upton brothers. Not good for us, I’m thinking. They had to give up Prado, which is not good for them. I think they are really gonna miss that guy. Big time. But I admit that I am trying to find reasons to think we have any chance at all for the post season. So I am cobbling together any shred of evidence at all.
The line up above is not helping me to do that. Remember when our line up was among the two or three most feared in all of baseball? Gone are those days.
Doc needs to be really good. Utley and Howard need to show up. Michael Young needs to be the guy from two years ago. Adams needs to be whole – and good – again. Revere and one other guy HAVE to be good in the OF (would it be completely impossible for Ruf to hit 270 with 30 dingers?).
C’mon. Work with me here.

BTW, check out David Murphy’s piece in today’s Daily News on the Phillies and Amaro.
Yes. Simply, yes.

The article is titled something like Delmon Young and the Potential Tragicomedy Called the 2013 Phillies.

Read it. I agree that there’s huge potential for 2013 to blow up on the Phillies. I don’t think investing $750,000 in Delmon Young is a mistake, though.
I think the Braves made a great deal to get Upton. Prado had a fantastic 2012, but that’s probably the best year of his career. Hopefully there will be more for Phillie fans to do this season than watch the Nats and Braves battle it out at the top of the division.

That is my hope. As we know all too well, being good on paper does not necessarily translate into being good on the field. (Remember talking about having four 20 game winners? Uh huh, I bought a “Four Aces” T-shirt too.) So just because the Braves and Nats have a terrific set of paper teams does not mean that they will be in the post season. And just because Dom Brown And just because Laynce Nix and Dom Brown are going to start games for us doesn’t mean that we might not have all of the requisite “ifs” break our way; after last year, we ought to get some of those “ifs” just by the law of averages.
It will be interesting to see how the pundits rank us this year preseason. Last year they picked us for the Series. I wonder if they will project us as a sub-.500 team this year. Maybe they will be just as wrong.

My guess is this team will probably be in the fight for a post season birth throughout most of the season. Probably the second wild card slot, so they will be in the one game playoff. I like their chances with having (hopefully) three guys that could pitch that game.
We shall see.

Seems like there are just a huge number of unknowns. Is Halladay Halladay? Can Michael Young play third? Can Delmon Young play outfield? Can Brown or Ruf play at all? Can Revere hit? I agree that I’m definitely not ready to say the season is lost. Lot of moving pieces, though. I also expect that the team that ends the year might look a whole lot different than the team that starts it.
January 24th, 2013 on 8:51 pm
Hard to remember a time with more unknowns. It could be really good or just a complete collapse.
And frankly, I have no idea what to expect anymore from the front office in terms of where they see this team going. This is the second consecutive season the winter has made no sense to me. Different in September than now? I guess. But what Amaro is doing or what he’s trying to accomplish or how just escapes me.
January 24th, 2013 on 9:09 pm
I think Amaro is trying to make a team without spending money. The Phillies spent all of their money and got a core that’s old and overpaid. He has to add a ton of starters who don’t cost anything. That means taking guys other people don’t want. Let’s hope he picked the right ones.
