Agreed. They both kinda had a 2012 that should make you worry. We saw how bad Victorino was at age 31. Chances are good he's going to get older. Upton again on-based .298 and continued a trend of worsening play in center. 28 home runs is nice, though.

Probably the main thing you are getting in Upton over Vic is about 3 years less wear & tear. Or said another way, you have less risk that the guy is starting his swan song.

I'm not sure it's a lock that Upton will be better than Victorino in 2013. Over the last three years, Victorino has been clearly better in one of the three (2011) and the other two have been close. Upton on-based .298 last season. Forced to pick, I would still guess Upton will be better in 2013. I don't think it's hard to argue that Victorino has been better over the last three years, though, and he'll almost surely be a lot cheaper. I think Victorino plus a real corner OF would be fantastic for the Phillies.

I think if Victorino is on the team, he has to play center, assuming the Phillies don't get Bourn or Ellsbury (I think it's close between Victorino and Upton, but I'd still take Victorino over Upton defensively for 2013).

Vic's 2012 would still be an upgrade over, say, Mayberry. I wouldn't be jumping for joy to have him back but he certainly looks a lot better than any of the other options. If we could get him on a 2-year deal (or a 3-year where we plan to have him pretend to be Juan Pierre the 3rd year), it would be worth it if we can't get Bourn or Upton and we can get a corner guy too.

I think that's a huge question about Victorino -- was 2012 the start of the end or just a bad year?

I don't know the answer.

I think he might come cheap for 2013 relative to the other guys we think to be available. He sure looked awful for the Phillies last year, especially hitting against right-handed pitching. I think there's still upside there, though (see 2011). I would be willing to take a chance, but I think it would be a big chance, cause he wasn't very good last year.

Wow. Loft in in 2005. I'd completely forgotten. Must be getting old.

Vic from 2011 to 2012. Wow again. What a dive. Beginning of his end or just a bad year?
