Someone will give Bay a chance for sure. The Phillies definitely need a corner OF. I think part of the problem is that you know he’s going to be terrible defensively, even if he hits in 2013. I agree that there’s upside, but I’d guess that the Phillies would worry there is so much downsize. Hopefully it doesn’t cost a lot if they take a chance, but I’d guess they won’t just cause I don’t think they can afford to make a mistake with the roster spot.

Speaking of guys that need to get better, the Mets have waived the opportunity collect a bag of balls in exchange for Jason Bay. Bay gets all his Met $ from the Mets and is a FA. I’d love to see the Phils give him a chance to see if a change of scenery clears his head, particularly since they’d only have to pay him veteran minimum.

I’m with you on the Halladay concerns. Not sure if it was his age, his workload or an injury, but he sure wasn’t right in 2012. He’s still just 35 — he should have good years left. Coming into the season he had thrown 1,414 2/3 innings over the previous six seasons. That’s an average of about 235.8 per year and his low for those six years was 220 (in 2006). That’s a whole lot of innings.

I am very concerned with Halladay for 2013. I fear his age is catching up to him. While Hamels and Lee can be 1 and 2 and Halladay is certainly better than any other number 3 pitcher in the game, he is being paid like a number 1 and the Phillies need him to perform as such.

I worry that the offense is bad enough that the Phillies need all three of Halladay, Lee and Hamels firing at the same time to win in 2013. They had two of the three (Lee and Hamels) going in 2012 and their top four SP combined for 10.4 WAR — less than half of the 25.0 their top four posted in 2011.

I think Halladay and Lee have upside that Hamels hasn’t demonstrated he can achieve yet. Doesn’t mean it won’t happen, but as good as he’s been, Hamels has never put up a WAR better than 6.2 and has been over 5.3 only once. Halladay and Lee have combined for three seasons at 8.3 or better since the start of 2010.

It seems like there’s a whole lot of worry about what Halladay can do in 2013. He can have a really successful season without ever being near as good as he was in 2010 or 2011.

Or the Phillies could just get a whole lot better at scoring runs. That doesn’t seem that likely, though.

On the other hand, Hamels’ trendline suggests he can cover for what Roy doesn’t give, if Roy keeps it in the ballpark. So to speak.

Yeah. I think that’s pretty much it. And Halladay especially has been better than good and has very little chance of being as good in 2013 as he was in 2010 and 2011.

Even if he’s good in 2013, there’s a lot of room from the bottom of ‘good’ to what he did for the Phils in ’10 and ’11. He could be really good in ’13 and put up half of the WAR he did in ’10 and ’11.

So that’s a problem.

So, in short, the Phillies pitchers have been good over the last five years. I’m interested to see what Halladay will do in 2013. I feel like I know what to expect from Hamels and Lee, but not so much with Roy.
