Just super ugly for the Phils in Houston. Papelbon doesn't appear in the set as the pitching implodes. Got to get him into the game. Still a glimmer of hope, but not much. Needed to do more in that series.

Definitely optimistic. Agree it hasn't been a good weekend for the Phils, who have gotten a ton of help from the other teams looking for the Wild Card and couldn't take care of business against the Astros.

They really can't afford to lose a lot of games. Up 4-3 with two outs in the bottom of the eighth and nobody on base is one you need to come up with if you want to make the playoffs and your chances of making the playoffs are 2.7%.

I really think Manuel didn't have a good game. I think it was too much to ask Aumont to come through for the fifth time in five days. That's a lot. Also, Diekman seems like an optimistic choice with two on and two out to pitch to Lowrie. Then he stuck with him for a while after that. Also used Bastardo before Aumont, meaning Bastardo couldn't be part of the committee to bail out Aumont when things went bad. How bout letting Aumont pitch the seventh instead -- if he's good, fine and Bastardo starts the eighth. If not, Bastardo can help him get out of the mess. Diekman didn't have a good day. Horst, Papelbon and De Fratus didn't pitch at all.

Cloyd can't go 3 1/2 innings per start like he has his last two times out. That's going to really hurt the Philles. Already has.

Don't know what the Phillies would do, but I'd guess there's close to no chance they would start Cloyd in a tie-breaker game unless getting into the tie-breaker game required them to use the guy they want to use in the tie-breaker.

I'd love to see the Phils take the rest of the series. And I agree the game against the Braves hurts more now looking back.

Also, playing out the pitching staff for the rest of the season...if the Phillies somehow wind up in a tie for the second wild card spot, it will be Cloyd's turn to pitch in the tiebreaker. I'm really hoping it doesn't come to that.

I figured on 3/4 of in the series with this one being the loss. Cloyd does not inspire confidence and Harrell has been one of the Astros best pitchers (best being a relative term when discussing the Astros).

Aumont had to have a bad game sooner or later, and pitching for the third straight day and fifth time in five days seems like as good of a time as any to have a bad game.

I do have a feeling that when this is all over, the Phillies will look back on this one and the 8-7 loss to the Braves (when they were ahead 7-2 in the ninth) and cringe a bit.
