They’re playing so well it’s tough to say it’s impossible. But it’s really, really unlikely. If they get to 85 wins they still need help from the teams ahead of them and they need to go 15-6 to get to 85 wins.

It seems like it would take a remarkable collapse for the Braves not to take one Wild Card spot. If that’s true it means the Cardinals, Pirates and Dodgers all would have to play really badly the rest of the way in combination with the Phillies being great for it to happen.

I put their chances at about 0.6%.

Still, playoffs or no playoffs, let’s hope they finish strong.

It was noted in the CBS article that the current playoff odds are the same as the Rays this time last year. So, there’s that.

You would think that events with <1% chance to occur wouldn't happen so often though.

I hope they let Manuel manage for as long as he wants. Will be nice to have Sandberg some day, too, but I’m pretty happy with Manuel until we’re certain the current run is over.

I don’t think it is yet.

Phillies are playing great. They shouldn’t count on winning this often when they score three runs, though, and they’re going to be scoring three runs a lot until they get some better hitters.

Also, their current playoff chances as calculated by Baseball Prospectus are 0.6%. They just round up to 1%.

Speaking of being 1 game under .500 and 5 games out of the WC, there’s a interesting piece on CBS on the whole Manuel / Sandberg situation.
