I admire Joe's effort last night. He won. He brought it. Was I relaxed as he pitched? Nope. But he knew they HAD to win. And he showed up. Here's a guy without sublime tools. But he showed up. I have to stand up and give him props.

Unlike Cliff Lee.

BTW, I left a final comment on yesterday's post. Sorry I didn't get there sooner.

Bad news is that I'm afraid he already has. Phillies are very fortunate to be 10-8 in the games that Blanton has started. They went 7-4 in his starts in May and June and he pitched to a 5.25 ERA over those outings and allowed 17 home runs in 72 innings.

The offense has been good in his outings, scoring 4.50 runs per game in his starts compared to 4.18 in his non-starts. But the bullpen has been fantastic when he pitches. After the scoreless inning from Papelbon last night, the pen has now thrown to a 1.79 ERA with a 1.02 ratio in Blanton's starts. I wonder what his secret is? Luck seems like a good guess.

Home runs are way down over his last couple of starts. He has allowed just three in 27 1/3 innings over his last four starts, which helps a whole lot. Gave up 15 in 42 1/3 innings in seven starts mid-May to mid-June.
