For those who follow the minor leagues and/or have given up on this year and are looking to the future, the Phillies have signed their first draft pick from this year:

He now becomes the third ranked prospect in the Phillies system after having never thrown a professional pitch. I’m not sure if that means he’s good or the minor league system is that bad.

Martinez doesn’t belong on a team. If he is on a team, he needs to be a late inning defensive replacement. He really can’t start. No argument here that Wigginton has been horrible defensively, but the Phils need to keep finding a way to put him on the field given their offense. Hopefully just not at third.

Wiggy also seems quite apt at going 0 for 4. Putting Martinez at 3rd if Polly can’t go doesn’t seem like the worst idea.

I still don’t think it’s over. 100 games left, and that’s a lot. Halladay, Utley, Howard and Domonic Brown still out there. Not saying it’s going to happen, but if the Phillies got all four of those guys going at the same time, they can be the best team in the league again (okay, a little help in the pen would be good). If it’s going to happen, though, it would be nice if it happened soon.

Been a rough 60 or so games. These are our guys, though, and they are playing about how they have always played in their careers. Should be few mysteries in that regard. As Eric has said: they need better players.

Starting to look pretty certain we are going to be sellers at the deadline. Amaro is gonna hand the PR department essentially the same load of rubbish he handed Charlie – make lemonade outta the lemons. Good luck with that.

Wigginton really seems like he’s unusable at 3B. Somehow FanGraphs has his UZR/150 at 3B for the year at 9.9, which is by far his best mark for his career. How is that possible? I don’t know.

Fontenot looking awful as well. I expected him to be much better defensively there than what he’s shown so far. On the plus side, it pretty much has to improve. The presence of Martinez makes me nervous. Hopefully Manuel won’t put him on the field every day no matter how many 0-for-4s he puts up as long as he doesn’t let the ball go through him twice a game.

Sad that I was thinking the same thing…at least they won’t lose. They are just brutal to watch these days, finding new ways to lose games. I almost think I’d feel better if they were expected to lose, although maybe I should start to expect it more.
