I wonder if they will have enough leads to protect to worry about overusing Papelbon. Jiminy.

The only thing that makes me feel at all good about this weekend, is that their top two guys beat the two guys at the end of our starting pitching lineup. If they had beaten Doc and Lee, it would have been even worse.

So, if you think they are going to sign Hamels and not trade him at the deadline for bat(s), when do you think they are going to sign him? What in the world are they waiting for?

I think a whole lot of them are the wrong reliever. Just about everyone but Papelbon. I agree he should be pitching more, especially in tie games. I do worry about him overusing on guy out there, though. Remember when Madson pitched pretty much every day in August and September at the end of 2010? I think it was 33 appearances between August 4 and September 29. That’s too many (also, the Phillies won the division by six games that year).

Agree that the offense is the much bigger issue than the pen, which is why the team can’t be giving up runs by having the wrong/tired/ineffective reliever in the game, because the offense can’t score enough to overcome it.

I think the offense is a much bigger problem than the pen, but the pen is bad. Sanches, Schwimer, Savery and Contreras seem like the guys you want to worry about the most, but I don’t feel real comfortable with Qualls or Bastardo either.

I would definitely like to see more of Papelbon in a tie game, especially if the other choice if bringing Schwimer back to throw a third inning.

Qualls can’t be the eighth inning guy in a tight game, cause he can’t be pitching to lefties too often.

Was more than a little surprised to see Cole hit for himself to start off the ninth. I know he was probably fired up after the beginning of the game, but they did pay Papelbon a ridiculous amount of money. You may as well use him, especially in a “save” situation.

Luckily, things didn’t turn out that way and they did wind up replacing Hamels. Was happy to NOT see Papelbon at that point.

Glad to see the team salvage one game in the series. I’m very perplexed by the bullpen handling to this point. To be honest, I’ve never understood the way Charlie manages his ‘pen. I guess that’s why he’s known as a hitter’s manager.
