I was thinking the same thing about Wigginton at third, but I think the Phillies have to keep putting him out there sometimes. At least against lefties. If the choices are Wigginton or a healthy Polanco at third against a righty, I think Polanco is the better choice.

I don't think we need to acquire much more data to know the Phillies have some real offensive problems with their current roster. I agree that there are a lot of games that could go either way and which way they go matter a lot, but in the bigger picture the Phillies are going to need better offensive players. They aren't going to the playoffs if they finish 14th in the league in runs scored (or 12th or 11th for that matter).

That might be the end of Wigginton at 3rd. Not least because it means Nix is at first.

A 1-0 11-inning game is a basically a toss-up. I wouldn't base any long-term conclusions about the team on it. The SF fans right now are complaining that they couldn't get any runs scored to get Cain a win...

In his defense, his defense is still fantastic, even better than it was last year so far if you believe UZR/150. Still wouldn't hit him second, though.

Wigginton has notably also been adequate there in limited time as well. I think the Phils will definitely be considering more time for Wigginton at third, especially against lefties, if Polanco continues to slump offensively.

Been a Polly fan, as you recollect. Not so much anymore. He sure looks used up. No bat speed. No solid contact. Kind of a bad combo for guy whose long suit was as a deft handler of the bat. Been a long, long time since last April.

Three walks and a HBP. Obviously it's a tiny number of games, but he's walked in about 6.5% of his PA in 2012 and about 7.1% for his career. One of the three walks he has was intentional (remember when James McDonald walked him intentionally to strike out Thome?). And the HBP helps his on-base percentage. So, it's real early, but I think it is accurate to say that his walk rate is down a little in the early going. On-basing .391 is the kinda thing we're looking for, however he does it.

Well.. we can start it with Polanco hitting somewhere else. Like 8th. Or on the bench. That would help.

Funny thing about Pence's OPS being over .900 .. has he walked yet?
