Phils topped the Pirates 7-2 last night in their final game before opening the regular season on Thursday. They end their official Spring Training games with a 14-16-4 mark.
Hamels started the game for the Phillies and was fantastic, throwing four shutout innings in which he allowed three hits, no walks and struck out five. In seven Spring Training starts, Hamels threw to a 2.93 ERA with a 1.19 ratio.
Bastardo started the fifth, throwing on back-to-back days. He faced three batters, got two of them and allowed a single to the other. Herndon took over with two outs and a man on first and allowed a double and a single to the first two men he faced before getting a strikeout to end the inning.
Bastardo ends Spring Training with an 0.81 ratio, but a 4.15 ERA. I feel pretty sure that if he keeps throwing to an 0.81 ratio, his ERA is going to be a whole lot better than 4.15. Last year, for example, his ratio was 0.93 and his ERA 2.64.
Herndon finishes with a 3.31 ERA and a 1.29 ratio. Opponents hit .288 against him, but in 16 1/3 innings he struck out 14 and walked just two.
Valdes threw a 1-2-3 seventh. Qualls threw a 1-2-3 eighth. Papelbon threw a 1-2-3 ninth.
Valdes will not make the team despite a 1.32 ERA and an 0.88 ratio and 14 strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings.
Qualls 4.22 ERA and 1.03 ratio. Opponents hit just .179 against him, but he walked four in 10 2/3 innings.
Papelbon finishes with a 3.86 ERA and a 1.29 ratio. He held opponents to a .229 average, but walked five in 11 2/3 innings.
Polanco was 1-for-3 in the game and hit a three-run homer in the fifth. He ends Spring Training at 429/478/571.
Galvis had another extra-base hit, doubling in his only at-bat. 280/295/476 in 82 at-bats. He led the team with 14 RBI.
Nix also doubled in what was an awful spring for him. He was 1-for-4 with a double in the game and winds up at 208/300/264.
Ruiz was 1-for-2 with a double. 479/500/771 in 48 at-bats. .771? Yup. 23-for-48 with eight doubles and two home runs.
Mayberry ends his ugly spring with a good day, going 1-for-3 with a double and a walk. 203/259/304. He gets a big do-over starting on Thursday — he and the Phils could both use it, cause they’re going to need him to not hit .203 with no power.
We’ll probably be seeing a lot of Wigginton in the early going, too. He was 0-for-1 last night to drop his line to 185/260/246.
Roy Halladay faces lefty Erik Bedard on Thursday.
Joe Savery made the team and so did Pete Orr. Podsednik (309/377/455) and Luna (302/351/528) did not. Neither did Raul Valdes.
Valdes was significantly better than his fellow lefty Savery this Spring Training. Valdes threw 13 2/3 innings with a 1.32 ERA and an 0.88 ratio while striking out 14. Savery threw to a 3.48 ERA with a 1.45 ratio and struck out nine in 10 1/3 innings.
Pierre winds up outhitting Podsednik. 377/433/426 in 61 at-bats for Pierre and 309/377/455 in 55 at-bats for Podsednik.
This says Stutes and Herndon will start the year with the Phils.
That makes 25.
Hitters (13): Ruiz, Schneider, Thome, Mayberry, Wigginton, Galvis, Orr, Rollins, Polanco, Nix, Pierre, Victorino, Pence.
Pitchers (12): Halladay, Lee, Hamels, Blanton, Worley, Kendrick, Papelbon, Savery, Bastardo, Qualls, Stutes, Herndon.

It’s for real, now. Only 162 to go.
April 4th, 2012 on 5:21 pm
Yup. Got the Start Log up and everything. Play ball.
April 4th, 2012 on 6:47 pm
Didn’t Savery start as a minor league first baseman at the outet of last year? And he is pitching for a major league team team with high asperations, just a year later? What a story that could be.

Ahh, opening day for the Phils… Gotta love it. Now we can see what we all talked about all winter and how it will play out. Lets Go Phils!
On a different note, wow to Miami. Quite a pregame show they put on. And that Lime Green all over the park, rather bright but you know, I like it. Any thing was better than ProPlayer/JimmyBuffet/SharksOnLand/Sponser-O’-The-Day place they uses to play in. I guess maybe though, they should have prepped for Loshe a bit more than the Brazilian dancer girls…
April 5th, 2012 on 9:17 am
Lohse looked great. I get the feeling we’re not going to love that Marlins team.
Lineup in the paper this morning says Pierre leading off and Wigginton at first. That means Mayberry on the bench so Pierre can play against a lefty? Yuck. At least there’s Halladay. That should help.
April 5th, 2012 on 10:03 am
Why do I have this horrible feeling that Pierre is going to get about about 650 plate appearances for the Phillies this year?
Yeah, Savery started last year as a first baseman. He had spent the previous few years as a pitcher and was both pitcher and first baseman in college. He hurt his shoulder and never seemed to get his fastball back. Then, he took last winter off of pitching to concentrate on hitting (and almost retired in the process), and the 3-4 mph that was missing from his fastball came back. If he has any sort of success at the major league level, he’ll be a great story. You’d still hope for more out of a first round pick, but it’s better than nothing.

I heard on WIP that Victorino is leading off and Mayberry is playing.

just saw this on philly dot com:

Yes. This lineup is way, way better than the one I saw in the paper this morning:
http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/phillies/Opening-day-line-up-unveiled-Victorino-leading-off-makes-sense.html
Shane Victorino CF
Placido Polanco 3B
Jimmy Rollins SS
Hunter Pence RF
Ty Wigginton 1B
John Mayberry Jr. LF
Carlos Ruiz C
Freddy Galvis 2B
Roy Halladay RHP
April 5th, 2012 on 10:45 am
I still think Polanco can’t hit second, cause of being a really bad hitter, but Pierre in left against a lefty with Mayberry on the bench would have been too much for me.
I agree that 650 plate appearances for Pierre would be too many. I think he could do a bunch of damage in 350 as well, however.
I think Savery is going to get hit pretty hard in the early part of the season. Hope not. Think he can be good and help the team, but probably not quite yet.
April 5th, 2012 on 12:54 pm
The only other 2-hole-type hitter would be Galvis. Unless you go Vic-Rollins, but then I don’t see a 3-hitter at all. Pence, with Mayberry cleanup? After that spring?
April 5th, 2012 on 1:04 pm
I understand what you mean. I don’t think either Galvis or Polanco has to hit second, though. Rollins/Victorino/Pence/Mayberry or Pence/Wigginton seem better against a lefty to me, even with Wigginton and Mayberry both having awful springs.
If we’re picking between Polacno and Galvis to his second, I think it’s got to be Polanco. But I don’t think either of them should be hitting near the top of the order. Polanco has on-based .335 with very little power over his last 1801 plate appearances.
April 5th, 2012 on 2:02 pm
1801 plate appearances is such a small sample though (insert sarcasm font).
Galvis hits into inning ending DP on his first plate appearance. Ugh.
April 5th, 2012 on 2:40 pm
Galvis likes his first at bat so much that he repeats it for the crowd. Whoops. It’s a Pittsburgh crowd.
April 5th, 2012 on 2:43 pm
It’s because Halladay is such a good leadoff hitter, he wants to give him the opportunity.
April 5th, 2012 on 2:55 pm
In Charlie’s defense, they can’t all hit eighth. Against a lefty, with those starters I think I’d go Rollins/Victorino/Pence/Mayberry/Wigginton/Ruiz/Polanco/Galvis.
On the other hand, the way they’re hitting it’s not going to matter a lot what order they hit in. Ruiz 2-for-2 at least. And a hit for Mayberry. Would prefer if Pittsburgh would stop hammering the ball to left if the Phils aren’t going to score, though.
April 5th, 2012 on 3:53 pm
And there you have it folks. The 2012 Phillies, winners in a 1-0 final. Expect a lot more of that.
April 5th, 2012 on 3:58 pm
Halliday. The kid just may have a future in baseball if he can keep this up.
April 5th, 2012 on 4:02 pm
Never a doubt. I don’t see any reason that Halladay can’t pitch on Saturday as well given the off-day tomorrow.
April 5th, 2012 on 4:03 pm
What was all of that about Halladay losing it? Still would be nice if he could get the other team to score negative runs.
Man this offense is ugly.
April 5th, 2012 on 4:24 pm
offense was a mess. 8 hits, Halladay gets one of em. haha. Chooch 3-3 though and Mayberry 2-4 right?
Maybe its a good thing Halladay is in decline? 8 inning of shutout ball by the starter and give it to Paps to finish the 9th. good recipe for this offense.
April 5th, 2012 on 4:27 pm
Not a pretty offense. Freddy, my lad, where did the spring RBIs go? Today was called an “opportunity”.No pressure, of course. But work on that, would you?
Dancing in my head are visions of Wigginton on second and Thome on first and needing a run to tie it in the ninth. If we could get Burrell as a runner on third it just might be the slowest gaggle of guys in baseball history.
April 5th, 2012 on 4:33 pm
Wigginton had a great game, but man that guy is slow. It’s really tough to see how the play at first in the second inning can even be close. Walker was way on the other side of short, way behind second, got up and still threw him “out.” He was safe, but it still shouldn’t be close. Also no score from first on Mayberry’s double.
Looked really good at first, though, with a couple of nice plays.
April 5th, 2012 on 10:54 pm
Mayberry is two for four. Please, please be a harbinger.
April 6th, 2012 on 9:32 am
I agree. Thrilled to see Mayberry go 2-for-4, even with two strikeouts. Just about anybody besides Wigginton (okay, Thome, Burrell, but most guys) would have scored on his double. Also had the only extra-base hit in the game for the Phils. Nice way to start after looking terrible during Spring Training.
