I've been away for a while...sorry about that. Nothing new to add to the conversation, other than I still believe this team is the one to beat in the NL East. Other teams have made improvements, but they had a long way to go to get to the Phillies level.

On Soler, if the Phillies sign him he automatically becomes the 3rd or 4th best prospect in the system, if not #1. He's that good, and I like him much better than Cespedes. He's got at least two years in the minors before he'd see Philadelphia, but still a special talent from what I've seen.

Here's another perspective --
How many of the last 5 World Series champs looked, at the start of the season, that they were a lock that would be going through a year-long coronation? Maybe the '09 Yanks.. anyone else?

The '11 WS was supposed to be Phils vs. Red Sox. One got knocked out in the first round, and the other completely missed the playoffs.

Looking like a "lock" seems like it might be a detriment. You seem to do better by being "good enough" and getting hot at the right time. The Phils are "good enough" with 3 aces and 2 #3's, even if the offense is down again. Putting Martinez on 2nd for D and keeping Utley's bat in the lineup at 1st isn't, in fact, the worst idea in the world. Does it look like the best team on paper? No. Can it win a championship? Absolutely.

As we throw names around about who will replace Howard, we are also talking about how big a deficit there will be at first base and in the most productive hitter (RBI production) in the lineup. For a team whose success has been so directly tied to 3/4 of its infield, the declining numbers of the incumbants at short and second, and the gaping loss at first seems to me to be the single greatest challenge facing this team. If this declines continue in 2012 and Howard remains out longer than expected, I am wondering if the team can be successful. It may well be that appearing in the post season is at stake, not just another parade.

At least it's creative. Honestly hadn't thought of that one. There's always the issue that in addition to Schneider being a catcher and someone who can't hit very well, Manuel is obsessed with never using his backup catcher cause that's how they did it back in the 60's.

Joe Savery is left-handed and hit .382 as a freshman at Rice. .335 as a sophomore. Cole Hamels, maybe? Hello?
