Today’s very early guess on who starts the year with the Phillies. Barring new injuries, I think we can count on these 12 hitters:
| 1 | Ruiz |
| 2 | Utley |
| 3 | Rollins |
| 4 | Polanco |
| 5 | Mayberry |
| 6 | Nix |
| 7 | Victorino |
| 8 | Pence |
| 9 | Wigginton |
| 10 | Thome |
| 11 | Schneider |
| 12 | Valdez |
Notable no-shows on that list include Ryan Howard, still recovering, Domonic Brown and Michael Martinez.
Assuming you don’t count Wigginton, there are just four outfielders on that list including one, Nix, who can never, ever be used against lefties. On a related note, I have some trouble buying completely into the idea that Wigginton is the nearly every day first baseman while Howard is out. If Thome can play first at all (he probably can’t) he’s clearly the better choice. I think Mayberry is a better choice offensively as well, but to give him much time at first the Phils are going to need someone who can man left field against left-handed pitching. Maybe someone like Ben Francisco? Oh, wait.
I see one or two hitting spots as open, depending on how many pitchers the Phils decide to carry. I think one of them is filled by a fifth outfielder, either Domonic Brown or someone not currently on the roster who hits right-handed.
I think these 12 pitchers are likely to start the year with the Phils:
| 1 | Halladay |
| 2 | Lee |
| 3 | Hamels |
| 4 | Blanton |
| 5 | Worley |
| 6 | Kendrick |
| 7 | Papelbon |
| 8 | Contreras |
| 9 | Bastardo |
| 10 | Stutes |
| 11 | Willis |
| 12 | Herndon |
That assumes Contreras is healthy enough to start the year, of course, which is far from a sure thing. After Contreras, Stutes and Herndon seem like the two pitchers with the least solid hold on their slot. Brian Sanches, Phillippe Aumont and Justin De Fratus seem like the most likely candidates to squeeze past them or take Contreras’s spot if he’s not ready to go.
I have trouble seeing the Phils carrying more than two lefties out of the pen to start 2012. Unless Bastardo or Willis get hurt, or are consistently and resoundingly awful in spring training, I’d be surprised to see Joe Savery or Jake Diekman start the year with the Phils.
Joe Blanton says he’s feeling and throwing well. If he’s healthy he seems like a lock for the rotation. If he’s not I’d guess Kendrick takes his turns in the rotation, barring a big effort in the spring from NRIs Dave Bush and Joel Pineiro.
If the Phillies went with 14 hitters to start the year, my guess would be that Stutes and Herndon would be fighting for the eleventh pitching slot, advantage Stutes.
Cesar Hernandez was fifth on MLB.com’s list of the top ten second base prospects. Sebastian Valle ninth on the list of catching prospects.
Thome says that Spring Training will be the true test for his back in terms of when and how often he might be able to place defensively at first this year. I’m going to be surprised if we see much at all of Thome at first in 2012.
This says the Phillies are one of four teams still in the mix to land Francisco Cordero.
Update: Wilson Valdez was traded to the Reds for 26-year-old left-handed reliever Jeremy Horst.

Ok, ok.. it’s going to take me a while to get over seeing Martinez’ name among the list of “notable” no-shows. I think I developed a nervous tic. Let’s just hope he is a no show.
I’m still having a dickens of a time believing that Amaro is done. Mayberry at first and “Who?” in left doesn’t sound like a team who is all in against a much improved constellation of Eastern teams.
January 24th, 2012 on 4:21 pm
MLB reporting Fielder to Detroit for nine years. And NOT to the Nats. Phew.
January 24th, 2012 on 4:56 pm
I’m not convinced we’ve seen the last of Martinez, yet. Is it too much to ask they keep him off of the opening day roster, though? Let’s hope not.
I still think Mayberry will play left a lot while Howard is out. I think Wigginton can play first against lefties for sure. The bigger question is who will play first against righties if Howard and Thome both can’t do it. I don’t think Wigginton is the right guy for that job.
I’m hoping we see Mayberry in the lineup nearly every day at the start of the season, whether it’s at first or in left.
January 24th, 2012 on 5:37 pm
Assuming no new talent for left field before opening day (I am not sanguine about Howard returning for any meaningful play next year), I am sure with you about Mayberry.
January 25th, 2012 on 10:57 am
I’m excited about this team heading into next year for sure. I think they are much better, on paper at least, heading into this year than last.
On a side note, I wouldn’t read too much into Cesar Hernandez being rated the 5th best 2nd base prospect in baseball. I think it speaks more to the weakness of the position than anything else. He is probably around the 20th best prospect in the Phillies system. Although, maybe that’s a good thing?
January 25th, 2012 on 11:42 am
Listened to Charlie on WIP yesterday afternoon around 5pm or so. He’s a beast of optimism and I love it. Plus, it means baseball is getting closer when he starts doing radio interviews.
I am interested to watch Pineiro at Spring Training though. While i agree that kendrick gets the nod for the rotation first, I would not be shocked if Pineiro gets it.
January 25th, 2012 on 1:28 pm
Got to agree with Bill about baseball getting closer. That’s good news.
I think there’s very little chance that Blanton won’t be ready to start the year. So barring an injury, I don’t think there’s an issue about who is in the rotation. I would like to see Piniero pitch well during spring training, too, and I wouldn’t be shocked if he won a rotation spot if one of the five guys they have already can’t go.
I’m going to hold off on my excitement on Hernandez at least until he makes it to Double-A. One thing I do wonder about is whether he is still going to be able to draw a significant number of walks as he goes up levels if he continues to hit for so little power. We’ll see. I was a little surprised to see him so high on that list of 2B.
January 25th, 2012 on 3:52 pm
Yeah, if you could give Hernandez’s patience to Valle or give Valle’s power to Hernandez, you’d have one heck of a ball player at a key position. Valle is one (probably 3rd best prospect in Phils system right now) that I’m surprised to see so low in the catcher rankings.
The chances of seeing Pineiro in Philly this year are pretty high. It is nice to have a 6/7 starter with his pedigree. I would have to think that Blanton, Worley, and Kendrick are all ahead of him in the pecking order right now though. One of Worley and Kendrick will be in the pen to start the year, so that makes Pineiro your sixth starter as I see it. Maybe Dave Bush too. I really like the way the Phillies use Lehigh Valley with their pitchers. Not so much with the position players, but one thing at a time I guess.
January 25th, 2012 on 3:59 pm
After what Worley gave us last year, I don’t see how he isn’t first among himself, Blanton, and Kendrick.
January 25th, 2012 on 4:16 pm
Well.. you can cross out #9 and write in Michael Martinez..
Valdez traded to Reds for LHP Jeremy Horst. (who?)
January 25th, 2012 on 4:17 pm
#12 I mean.. sheesh.
January 25th, 2012 on 4:21 pm
I just saw the trade. Does this mean that Martinez is inevitable? Say it ain’t so, Joe.
January 25th, 2012 on 4:23 pm
Yup on Valdez.
http://www.delawareonline.com/article/20120125/SPORTS01/120125048/Phillies-trade-Valdez-Reds-left-handed-pitcher?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|Home
That one’s a surprise to me. If it means more Martinez, I don’t think it’s great news. Hopefully it means the Phils are going to pick up a UT guy.
Haven’t seen much of Horst, but his numbers over the last couple of seasons are good. And the Phils can sure use some left-handed help out of the pen.
January 25th, 2012 on 4:57 pm
I don’t get the Horst trade…lefty in the Pen…is that in case Dontrell stinks it up? My guess is they got a call about Reds needing a guy like Valdez and they took a quality young arm…so it may not help them a lot this year but having him on the team locked up in a contract for a a few years helps them in the long run, if Bastardo gets injured if D-Train’s career is over.
Personally I hope both Bastardo and D-Train have great seasons, especially Dontrell against Lefty’s and Horst joins the team and fills in nicely in the next few years.
But in general I don’t understanding the thinking…especilly with Jimmy being injury prone the last few years…Valdez is MUCH better utility than Martinez.
I can say that Valdez def was a fan favorite and will be missed as a solid fill in player that brings it.
But who knows what Ruben is thinking on this one or if there is something else in the works.
January 25th, 2012 on 4:58 pm
I realize Valdez is no great shakes but if I have to pick between Martinez and Valdez, it’s gonna be Valdez. I also realize if a team is picking for a trade, they are picking Valdez as well. Reading what Amaro said afterward scares me a bit. He basically felt hes in good middle inf. relief with Martinez, Galvis, Orr, Frandsen and Luna with Galvis starting regularly at the ‘Pigs. I really think that if I have to pick outta that 4 or Valdez, I’m gonna go with Valdez. Eh, I guess its not worth getting all riled up about backup middle infield depth, just a curious move to me.
I wonder if Amaro at least asked for Madson in return. I mean, late inning pitcher for late inning pitcher right?
January 25th, 2012 on 5:03 pm
Looks like the Phillies are out of the mix on Cordero as well, since he’s signed with the Blue Jays:
http://tracking.si.com/2012/01/24/report-blue-jays-sign-francisco-cordero-to-one-year-4-5-million-deal/?sct=mlb_t2_a7
I guess Horst is another lefty to throw into the mix. Looking at his numbers, he reminds me a lot of Joe Savery. Not sure that is a good thing.
January 25th, 2012 on 8:05 pm
Just looking at the way the Reds used Horst in 2011, it looks like they didn’t see him as a lefty specialist or a one inning guy. In five of his 12 outings he went more than an inning.
He also didn’t do well against lefties in his brief time with the Reds last year. They hit 319/409/579 against him (in 22 plate appearances).
Not a whole lot of time with the Reds, so those numbers likely don’t mean a lot. Hopefully he proves to be a workHorst for the Phils.
January 25th, 2012 on 5:04 pm
I don’t really understand the trade either. Losing Valdez isn’t that big a deal, but, again, I hope it means a new utility guy is on the way rather than more Martinez.
I don’t think we’ll have to wait long for an explanation.
January 25th, 2012 on 5:10 pm
Unloading Valdez’ contract? (Attempt at humor here)
I was at the 19 inning game right to the end. Valdez was great. The fans loved him. It was an insane night and Wilson was amazing. But in the grand scheme of things, this is not really a biggie, is it? Some guy on Crossing Broad went haywire saying that Amaro had traded our “SS of the future”. I mean, scale has to be established here. Valdez cannot be that hard to replace; there HAS to be someone out there to bring in whose name is not “Martinez”.
January 25th, 2012 on 6:11 pm
Valdez has a better shot at being a closer than a starting shortstop. Yeesh.
Martinez’s D looked pretty good to me, at least at short. Too bad there’s no such thing as a designated fielder. I do feel like the Phils got the better end of the trade, with a youngish lefty with a sub 3 ERA. But, given the choice, I’d prefer Martinez be the starting 2B at AAA and somebody not currently with the Phils be the utility guy.
January 25th, 2012 on 6:15 pm
Jim, yeah. There has to be a “somebody not currently with the Phils”.
January 26th, 2012 on 11:10 am
According to Heyman, the Phils are “bottom fishing” for exactly that person. Don’t be surprised if they scare up someone like Pedro Feliz.
January 26th, 2012 on 11:27 am
I think whoever they come up with has to be someone who can play short. I think that makes Luna and Orr unlikely candidates. Frandsen seems like a possibility, but I would still say Martinez is by far the most likely candidate of the players they currently have.
Hopefully the role will be filled by a player they don’t currently have.
