The offense did not roll against the Giants a weekend or so ago, has not for a ling time, but simply must. When we see the Giants next, the Pense move will show if we have another NLCS Uh-oh in the offing. My hope is that Pense will free Howard to do the kind of damage he has not been able to do but must against them.

But we shouldn’t forget that the offense was rolling for the Phils before Pence arrived, either. The Phils scored about 5.43 runs per game in July before Pence got here and 13 in the two games since he’s arrived.

Howard and Ibanez both have had a big game since he showed up, which is great. And if it’s cause of Pence that’s fine with me. But Ibanez was hitting 303/338/539 in his 80 plate appearances before Pence got here. Howard was scuffling a little, 1-for-his-last-12 and hitting just 220/276/363 in July before going 4-for-4 with three extra-base hits on Saturday.
