The Phils have now scored nine runs over their last five games, which seems unusual even for this year’s team. It is. The table below shows the result for each game the Phils have played this season, the number of runs the team has scored in their last five games at the end of that day, the number of runs the team has scored in their last ten games at the end of that day and the average number of runs per game the team has scored for the season through that day’s game.

Not much good news about the offense there. The table shows, for example, that after the first ten games of the season, the Phils had scored 31 runs in their last five games, 63 runs in their last ten and were scoring an average of 6.3 runs per game for the year. After last night’s game, they had scored nine runs over their last five games, 28 over their last ten and 4.05 per game for the year.
In the limited good news category, even if the nine runs is the team’s worst mark for a five-game stretch for the year, 28 runs (or 2.8 runs per game) over a ten-game stretch hasn’t been the worst mark for the Phils this season. In the ten games that ended on 4/25, the Phillies scored 25 runs.
Finally, the Phils are now tenth in the NL in runs scored per game. That number would be worse it it weren’t for the hot start by the offense, which scored more than five runs a game (5.27) through the first 15 games of the season.

The Daily News this morning said that last night’s game with five hits gave us a streak of five games with five or fewer hits, a streak we have not seen since 1959. If we have five or fewer hits tonight, we will tie the all time Phillies record for a six game streak of five or fewer hits. Given the historic futility of the Phillies, that probably is not a good thing for us to be flirting with.
I remember watching that 1959 team. That team went 64-90 for the year and made it a challenge to be optimistic. Da Bums were my guys, though, and they still are. This team should not be on a par with that team. It simply should not, and CAN not continue to do so.
I agree with the previous post. Who closes is not nearly as important as who hits behind Ryan Howard. Or who hits sixth. If you do not have a lead going into the ninth, you do not need a closer. Starting Gload tonight stuns me; batting him behind Howard looks like the move of pure desparation. Personally, it is time to give one of the corners to Mayberry. And it is time to bring Dom Brown up for the other. Unless Amaro is going to make a trade, it is time to go with the guys I just mentioned. They cannot possibly be less productive than the guys who started in the corners. At the very least, they will add speed, defense and arm strength.
Having Utley back will also help. It will not be THE solution, but it is part of what needs to happen. Utley and the corners. How can that be worse than what we have now?
GO BUMS.

I don’t think it can. I hope Utley can contribute something, but I’m going to be surprised if he can. Even if he can’t, he can’t be much worse than what they have now.
I think Francisco and Ibanez are going to keep getting chances and will put up better numbers before the end of the year. I am ready to see Brown soon, though.

Oh yeah, and tonight’s game was putrid.

I must say that I am a little upset at the roster management. I know, hindsight is 20/20 but now Victorino cannot be back dated more than 1 day and it seems he is going to the DL now. And this Blanton start stunk from the begining. Bullpen as taxed last night although they didnt have to use the big guns at least. Mathieson did a nice job with a couple of K’s. Worley coming back I guess?
Bright side: Halladay, Lee, Oswalt going this weekend!

I’d guess Worley, so it’s good they kept him as a starter. Tough task for Kendrick having to start last night on no notice when he’s not stretched out.
Agree about Blanton. How can you not know until he’s warming up that he can’t pitch.
More than the roster timing, I’m real worried about who the hitters they’re carrying on their roster are. The biggest problems with the offense are about what the superstars are doing, but there are way too many marginal players on the roster.
