I wonder about how much Zagurski can help, too. He's definitely gotten hammered in his limited time with the Phils -- the 6.99 ERA goes a ways towards demonstrating that. Even in the minors, though, he still has a monster walk rate. 103 walks in 242 minor league innings. That's too many. It's not really getting better, either -- over the last two seasons it's gotten a little worse in the minors.

Of the four open spots, Kendrick in one of the pitching slots is the one I feel most confident about. I agree about Bastardo if healthy, Zagurski if not, too.

I'm going to sad if Martinez starts the year with the team, regardless of the health of Utley. Today he played CF and homered, which doesn't seem like a good sign.

I have a fear that they will keep Martinez as another infielder with Valdez, and pretend Gload is an outfielder. Based upon performance to this point, I'm guessing Mayberry is the "fifth" outfielder with Brown in AAA. I'm nearly positive that Martinez will make the team if Utley starts the season on the DL.

My guess is Bastardo if healthy, Zagurski if not for the other lefty and Kendrick as the last man in the pen. They almost have to keep one of Worley or Kendrick in AAA as the emergency starter/Blanton trade replacement.

I think there's a good chance you'll be right about Zagurski. I would definitely guess Bastardo if he's healthy, but that's seeming kind of iffy. It sure seems like there's an opportunity for Dan Meyer if he pitches well, too, but he's not really a lefty specialist.

The Phillies took Michael Martinez in the Rule V draft. He's 28 and can't hit so much -- he sports a .315 on-base percentage in the minor leagues. Chances seem good they will be offering him back to the Nats.

I would bet the Rule 5 pick (that's Young, right?) gets a spot.
I also have no faith that Bastardo will be ready, and we're like as not to see Zagurski.
