It seemed odd to me, too. I thought Werth looked pretty solid out there. Alas. At least we know he can throw.

Ah. Yes, I remember now that you did those magic stats of yours to show that jason was not the second coming of Roberto Clemente in right field. I can remember because it surprised me that the stats demonstrated that he was LESS than average. It still surprises me. But it makes me feel better if he was not so great defensively, if for no other reason that he would not be as hard to replace. That is a good thing.

I agree. Like you, most of what I remember about Francisco from his time from the Phillies is big swings in unimportant situations. He did get some chances in the NLCS last year, with not so stellar results. The biggest at-bat was when Bumgarner struck him out in sixth inning of game with one out, Ibanez on third and the score tied at 2-2. Just one at-bat, of course, but it's a tough one to forget.

He's now 1-for-17 with a single in the post-season for his career. Again, a tiny number of at-bats, but still.

Defensively, he's only played about 160 innings in right field over the past two years. Werth's advanced fielding stats suggest he wasn't real special in right last year, anyway, so I would be surprised if Francisco hurts the Phils defensively in right in 2011 (at least compared to 2010).

Ok. But I have to admit that Ben has to convince me. I feel very uncomfortable with his being "the guy" in right. Offensively, i just do not have a lot of fond memories of his at-bats. I know that he played sporadically, and that can take its toll on a player's offensive performance, but he is on no one's radar screen as anything else but a bench player.

BTW, any way to measure his defensive aptitude vs. Werth's?
