The Phillies were 5th in the NL in runs scored in innings 1-3, 2nd in runs scored in innings 4-6 and 3rd in runs scored 7-9. So they got a little better after the first couple of innings.

I think the bigger thing with the winning percentage of the bullpen is just that the numbers are very fragile because they are so small. If the bullpen had gone 26-18 instead of 27-17 they would have had a .591 winning percentage. In the same way, one loss turned into a win would have made them 28-16, which is a .636 winning percentage. On the other hand, the Phils did have a 6-2 record in Madson's decisions -- in non-Madson relief decisions they were 21-15. Madson pitched great, but if you wanted to know how much of that was Madson and how much was the offense in those games, you'd have to look at them pretty carefully.

The result still seems odd to me. Does the bullpen get better run support than the starters? Do the Phils simply score more runs in later innings? (Can you distinguish between those two hypotheses?)
