I agree. As good as the pitching looks, the bats have been almost as bad. The Phils got huge help from the Reds in the series, six errors in the last two games, and still scored less just 13 runs over three games. They had just four extra-base hits in the series. That could be a big problem when they face a Giants team that keeps even the teams hitting well from scoring runs.

I don't think we should make too much of what Oswalt said. I would assume we'll get some clarification about what he meant before too long. I'm going to be surprised if it's that he thinks Ruiz is responsible for the pitches he throws.

Cueto seems like he's the best of the three Cincinnati starters the Phils will see in games 1, 2 and 3. So hopefully the bats show up.

Awful game. But I sure will take the win because the way the Phillies are playing, I am sure glad we are not going to Cincy tied. The hitting is scary stuff. Having to have 5 outs in an inning in order to score is not something that should be reliably expected to repeat.

Curious about Oswalt's comment that his problem was not placement of a pitch, but the pitch selection itself. Wonder if he will get a Christmas card from Chooch this year.

I think I would keep starting Rollins. He has hit the ball hard several times and almost homered in game one. The Bruce ball was lined to right. Like you say, there have been a couple of times he would have been safe if he could run normally. I know it's grasping at straws, but he did draw a walk in game one to keep the drive alive for Victorino's single. Even as well as Valdez played at the end of the year, I think I would still stick with Rollins.

I share the concern about the lack of extra-base hits. I don't want to go through another Utley-can't-throw-to-first thing this year, either.

Great to see the pen pitch well. I expected Madson to be on, but it was nice that everyone else (Romero, Contreras and Lidge notably) joined him.

Overall, though, I'm with you. Ugly, ugly game, but a win is a win.

Ridiculous, ridiculous game. I couldn't stop laughing on the Rollins ball that nobody wanted to handle, and I had a hard time not laughing at all the hit batters, too. A W is a W, though.

Where is the power? Phils are getting it done on walks, singles, and errors. That's more the Tampa Bay Rays game plan, and we see how their playoffs are going.

Call it blasphemy, but I wonder if Rollins is hurting the team by playing. There were 2 balls he would have been safe on in ordinary circumstances that he was out instead. If I'm Charlie, I'm thinking about starting Valdez for Game 3 (footnote about consecutive playoff games started by the same 5 guys be damned), and Game 4/5 if necessary, and letting JRoll get a week off before the NLCS.
