Game score something to adore for Phils' pitchers
July 12 2007
Using game score as the measure, here are the best and worst starts for the Phillies this season:
| Best | ||||||||||
| Player | Date | OPP | Result | GS | IP | H | R | ER | BB | K |
| Lieber | 6/9 | KC | W4-0 | 92 | 9 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 11 |
| Hamels | 4/21 | CIN | W4-1 | 86 | 9 | 5 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 15 |
| Worst | ||||||||||
| Player | Date | OPP | Result | GS | IP | H | R | ER | BB | K |
| Eaton | 4/28 | FLA | L11-5 | 16 | 4.1 | 10 | 7 | 7 | 3 | 4 |
| Moyer | 5/19 | TOR | 13-2 | 16 | 3.1 | 8 | 7 | 7 | 2 | 2 |
| Garcia | 6/8 | KC | L8-4 | 16 | 1.2 | 7 | 6 | 6 | 2 | 1 |
If you've been reading the Start Log, and I know you haven't, you know that the Phillies are 38-21 this season in games where their starting pitcher has posted a game score above 40. A game score of 41 is not exactly lighting things up. Here's two starts with a game score of 41 from this season:
| Player | Date | OPP | Result | GS | IP | H | R | ER | BB | K |
| Lieber | 5/5 | SF | L9-4 | 41 | 6 | 7 | 4 | 4 | 2 | 1 |
| Kendrick | 7/6 | COL | L7-6 | 41 | 6 | 10 | 3 | 3 | 1 | 2 |
Those starts aren't especially fantastic. The Phillies lost both those games, the only two on the season so far where the game score of the Phillies' starting pitcher was exactly 41, so they are 38-19 in games where their starting pitcher's game score was above 41.
The Phillies only need mediocre starting pitching to win. They are 36-23 in the games started by Moyer, Hamels, Eaton and Kendrick and 8-21 in games started by someone else.
The Phils went just 3-9 in the games that Jon Lieber started. Forgotten by many is just how terrible Lieber was in the games before his injury. The Phillies won the game in just one of his last six starts, his brilliant outing in Kansas City on June 9. Not including that start he was 0-4 with a 9.00 ERA is 27 innings in his last six appearances.
