March 3 2007

The Phillies renewed Ryan Howard's contract for one year at $900,000.

No way the Phils convert Brett Myers to a closer says Manuel.

Manuel likens the Abreu trade to the trade of Bartolo Colon when he Manuel was with the Indians in this article.

The Phils beat the Indians 6-4 yesterday to improve to 1-1 in spring action.

Shane Victorino stole another base, his first official pilfer of spring training.  He swiped another in the exhibition game against Florida State.  Yesterday's came with Ryan Howard at the plate.  Victorino was 2-for-3 on the day.

Ryan Howard hit a solo home run, his first of the spring.  Nunez had a two-run single.  Burrell 1-for-2 with an RBI and Rowand 0-for-2 with a sac fly.

Among those fighting for a spot, Karim Garcia had another good day.  He was 2-for-3 with a double.  Coste and Dobbs were both 0-for-1.

Brett Myers got the start for the Phils and went three innings, allowing two runs on two solo homers while striking out four.  Justin Germano allowed a single in his scoreless frame.  JA Happ allowed one hit in two scoreless innings.  Madson pitched the seventh and allowed a two-run home run.  Lefty Jim Crowell, a 32-year-old NRI, threw a scoreless eighth.  Alfonsenca threw the ninth, allowing a leadoff double but setting down the next three men in order to end the game.

Aaron Fultz pitched the fourth for the Indians and set down Victorino, Utley and Howard 1-2-3.

The Phillies play the Red Sox this afternoon.
